Uber Credit Card Review

Uber Visa Card

Get rewarded with the Uber Credit Card from Barclays

Rideshare lovers, rejoice! The Uber Credit Card from Barclays is back with a new rewards system for Uber devotees. When Barclays re-released this card on October 28, 2019, they changed the rewards to be all Uber Cash, all the time. You’ll earn 5% back in Uber Cash on all Uber rides, Uber Eats and JUMP electric bikes and scooters, 3% back in Uber Cash on dining, hotels and airfare (yes, that includes rentals from home-share exchanges like Airbnb) and 1% back on all other purchases. You’ll find no limit to the Uber Cash rewards you can earn from the Uber Visa credit card.

This card is an avid Uber rider exclusive. If you don’t use the ridesharing platform regularly, you’ll find little benefit from the Uber Visa since all of its rewards are in Uber Cash. You’ll be much better off with a standard cash back or travel card with rewards that you can use on the purchases that you make most often.

What to expect from the Uber Visa credit card

  • APR: 17.24%, 23.24% or 27.99% variable APR based on your creditworthiness.
  • Annual Fee: $0
  • Reward Rates: Earn 5% back in Uber Cash on Uber rides, Uber Eats and JUMP. Earn 3% back in Uber Cash on restaurants, bars, hotels and airfare. Earn 1% back in Uber Cash on all other purchases.
  • Intro Offer: Earn $100 Uber Cash after spending $500 on purchases in the first 90 days

Even better

  • Mobile phone protection: The Uber credit card was one of the first cards to protect your mobile phone from damage or theft when you pay your phone bill with your card. You’ll be protected up to $600.
  • No foreign transaction fees, helping you save a little more.
  • Uber Cash transfer: Put your Uber Cash to work by automatically transferring your Uber Cash balance to your Uber Account once you earn $50 in Uber Cash.

But keep your eyes open for pitfalls

If you only use Uber, Uber Eats or JUMP electric bikes and scooters occasionally, you’ll find it hard to extract any real value from the rewards you earn with the Uber Visa credit card. While the old version of the card had a more traditional cash back rewards system, the revamped rewards program pays you only in Uber Cash, dramatically limiting how and when you can use your rewards.

If you aren’t a regular Uber rider, a cash back card will give you the flexibility to use your rewards on the purchases you make most often. A great option for you would be the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® Card. You’ll earn 3x Go Far® Rewards points on eating out and ordering in, gas stations, rideshares and transit, flights, hotels, homestays, car rentals and popular streaming services, as well as 1x points on all other purchases.

You can either redeem Go Far points for cash (one cent per point) or use them to purchase travel through the Wells Fargo portal, where their value increases to 1.5 cents per point. Like the Uber Visa, the Wells Fargo Propel credit card also has no annual fee, making it a great and comparable option for those who don’t use Uber enough to take advantage of the Uber Cash rewards.

How to maximize your Uber Visa from Barclays credit card

Grab your bags and get moving next time your plane lands. With the Uber Visa credit card, your days of waiting in line and signing your life away at the airport rental car agency are over. Instead, open your Uber app while you wait for the family of five, three rows up to grab their bags, and you’ll have a ride waiting for you when you get to the door — all while earning 5% back in Uber Cash.

Taking full advantage of your Uber Visa credit card takes only three simple steps. First, skip the taxis and rental cars when you travel. Use your card and the Uber Cash you earn from it to get around hassle-free. You’ll earn the highest rewards rate when you use your card to make Uber purchases — whether they be rides, Eats or JUMP rentals.

Second, make sure you earn the $100 in bonus Uber Cash for the new cardmember reward. It’s not the most spectacular new cardmember bonus, but it’s easy to earn. You’ll only need to spend $500 on purchases in your first three months to be $100 of Uber Cash richer.

Third, pair your card with your Uber account to automatically transfer your Uber Cash rewards to your account, so that every time you use Uber, Uber Eats or JUMP, your rewards will be readily available. You won’t have to worry about transferring them or forgetting they’re even there.

Bottom line

The Uber Visa from Barclays credit card is a fantastic choice for those who would prefer to let someone else do the driving. If your monthly budget has a line item called “Uber rides,” you should take advantage of the excellent Uber Cash rewards offered by the Uber Visa card.

Beware, though, the redemption limits of the Uber Visa’s rewards. This card is for Uber customers and Uber customers only. You’re rewarded handsomely in Uber Cash, which cannot be redeemed for cash-value through the card. If you only ride Uber occasionally, you’ll find little benefit to keeping the Uber Visa credit card in your wallet. Instead, look toward cards like the Wells Fargo Propel American Express for cash back and travel rewards that you can redeem anywhere while still paying a $0 annual fee.
